Today I was teleported. With just a click I jumped across the world into a room of a stranger. Again and again and again.
Today I stumbled upon Bear Blog Discover.
Bear Blog Discover is just an upvote based hackernews kind of feed for blog posts using Bear Blog platform. Because every link is an individual’s own blog, the immediate reaction is to acclimatise to the drastic change in visual choices, fonts and layout.
The author’s individuality and taste greet you as the page loads. You have now landed in the author’s living room.
This is how the ‘old internet’ was. Yahoo and Google were just links and you never knew what unseen living room waited on the other side.
Then we started spending all our time in a few siloed apps. These became our homes on the internet. That long exile is what makes the ‘old internet’ feel new again.
Normal people don’t use the internet; they use social media.
Of course, things go deeper than the visual first impressions. The writing feels more raw, authentic, and genuine. No growth hacking or algorithm to optimise.
There is something satisfying in putting a document at a permanent URL.
Blogging always made it difficult to build a big follower base, and maybe the people who continue to blog are those who don’t care.
